LEFT 4 DEAD

Valve has long been one of those developers who can create a fun and engaging experience that gamers of all walks will love while building upon the genre as a whole. Their Half-Life franchise has laid the groundwork for mods and games like Team Fortress and Counter-Strike, providing a new spin on the multiplayer shooter genre and garnering huge cult followings. Now, Valve is looking to switch it up again with their latest innovative multiplayer focused shooter, Left 4 Dead.

Left 4 Dead takes the suspense and intensity of zombie films like George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead franchise and puts you right into the action. Melding together team-based shooting with twitch mechanics, Left 4 Dead isn’t about capturing flags or spawn points. Rather, at its core, it’s all about survival, as simple a goal as it gets, but ultimately extremely fun and addictive. If you’re a multiplayer shooter fan, then this game is definitely one you’ll want to check out.
The game’s campaign has a pretty basic storyline involving a pandemic virus that has turned a sizable chunk of the population into bloodthirsty maniacs, but none of that really matters. It’s all standard fare inspired by a flock of zombie horror flicks from the past several decades. All you really need to know going is it that you are one in a group of four survivors who are vastly outnumbered and forced to shoot your way through a horde of zombies in order to get from safe house to safe house and eventually get out of town.

There are four different avatars that you’ll play as in Left 4 Dead. While they each fit a different horror movie protagonist archetype, like the tattooed biker or grizzled war vet, but they each feel exactly the same. Together, the four of you will begin in a safe house, an area where you can’t be attacked and you’ll be able to stock up on weapons, ammo and healing items. You’ll then move on to the hot zone where zombies will be able to attack you and you’ll have to fend them off while moving towards the next safe house. The game doesn’t really get any more complex than that, and ultimately benefits from it.
One of the coolest factors in the game is the difference in enemies. There are several different types of zombies, and each one brings their own elements to the table. There are the standard zombies who will run at you, there are Smokers who can grab you and pull you in with their tongues and give off a harmful gas, Boomers who explode and spread goo that will attract swarms of other zombies, and Hunters, who are very agile and dangerous. There are also Tanks and Witches, which are both extremely difficult to kill once they’re onto you.

The game features a pretty awesome dynamic element called the director. What the director essentially does is dictate the pace and conditions of the game depending on how you’re playing. If your group is calm and collected, then the game will play it a little easy, offering up health packs and grenade items like pipe bombs as you go and keeping things slightly chill. However, if you’re constantly under duress, then the relentless director will keep piling on the stress, taking away helpful items and throwing tons of zombies your way, and the aesthetic of the game will begin to gradually change as the situation grows more desperate.

While co-op is the biggest element in the game, there are also some pretty fun competitive multiplayer gameplay. In eight-player matches, you'll get into teams of 4-on-4, with one team playing survivors and the other team being zombies and taking advantage of their special abilities. Playing as the zombies also requires a lot of teamwork, as each of you will use your respective abilities in order to take down the survivor team.
The game’s campaign is pretty addictive and will keep you coming back over and over again, but there are a few problems. The single-player element feels pretty hollow, and this game is truly meant to be a multiplayer experience. Taking on the legions of zombies without friends is an empty experience indeed. Fortunately, the online experience is an easy one to do, as setting up matches with three of your friends is a relatively painful process. While the matchmaking element works pretty well, the lack of a server browser feature is a noticeable omission.

Another problem with the game is its dearth of maps. After some pretty intense play sessions, it was easy to feel a sense of d?©j? vu as the same four campaign maps were frequently revisited. While they are pretty varied and offer some unique elements in each one, hopefully Valve will release more map packs later on down the line.

Even though it’s based on around the same Source engine that’s been around for several years now, Left 4 Dead is one great looking game. The maps each have their own detailed look to them, and a variety of special effects, like dynamic lighting and film grain, help pull you in to the experience. The character models also looked quite good, with some great details and facial effects.
The sound effects are also pretty well done. The characters will often call out for help if they’re in a sticky situation, and will announce to the group if they find something of interest. The music is pretty ambient stuff, which helps to draw you into the game, and changes with the on-screen intensity.

Left 4 Dead is a great multiplayer game and one of the best co-op experiences you’re likely to see, offering dynamic AI and addictive gameplay. While I would’ve like to have more maps, I can ultimately see Left 4 Dead having some serious staying power as a multiplayer shooter.

Review Scoring Details for Left 4 Dead from an ex site :p

Gameplay: 8.5
While the game is a little short on maps and the single-player experience feels a bit empty, there’s a lot to love here if you’re a fan of multiplayer shooters. The director feature keeps you on your toes with dynamically shifting AI and situations, and the gameplay is fast, intense, and very addictive.

Graphics: 9.0
Even though the engine is pretty old, Left 4 Dead looks great. The character models are clean and expressive, the environments are very detailed, and the special effects add a lot of atmosphere to the gameplay.

Sound: 9.0
The voice work sounds good, and the music adds a terrifying sense of ambience.

Difficulty: Medium

Concept: 9.0
While a bit short on maps, Left 4 Dead’s core gameplay is very unique and addicting.

Multiplayer: 9.5
The co-op experience is unrivaled, but the competitive modes are very fun as well.

Overall: 8.9
Left 4 Dead is a great multiplayer shooter with many elements that you won’t find in any other shooter this year. The co-op experience is unrivaled and the dynamic AI is an excellent design choice. While more maps would’ve been nice, Left 4 Dead is still a worthy purchase for any fan of multiplayer shooters.
